The two pieces of furniture currently displayed in the Phoenix Room were built during the Meiji period and imported from England by the Maple Company.
Several pieces of furniture made by Maple remain in the museum, many of which are also designated as Tangible Cultural Properties of Kyoto City.
The wood decoration is inlaid, with lines carved and then inlaid with other shades of wood to create a delicate pattern.

The furniture on the left hand side was used as a wardrobe with two large full-length portraits, while the furniture on the right hand side was used as a washbasin at that time.
The vanity is covered with tile and marble on the top to protect it from getting wet.
