Art Festival in CHOURAKUKAN [Ends on Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1, 2023].

To express our gratitude for your patronage, we will hold the Art Festival in CHOURAKUKAN.
The theme of the Art Festival 2023 is "Welcome to the Guest House.
We will offer a variety of events to give you a taste of the hospitality of Chorakukan, a guest house of the Meiji era.
This Western-style building, which incorporates art styles from around the world, was built in 1909 as a guesthouse by industrialist Kichihei Murai, and was designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Kyoto City in 1986.
It is our wish and mission to pass on this cultural asset to the next generation and to support art and culture as a museum of the arts.
Please enjoy this two-day event on Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1.

Art Festival in CHOURAKUKAN

  • The Art Festival in CHOURAKUKAN will feature a special menu at the café for two days only, a special opening of the Onari-no-Ma and Chorakuan (normally closed to the public), a special exhibition by Okura Toen, and a fashion show by Kyoto Women's University students.
    Special events include a piano trio concert, a creative rakugo story about Kibei Murai, and a lunch and dinner collaboration between Okura Toen and FRENCH LE CHENE.

    Doors will open at 10:15 on the day of the event. Various events other than the fashion show will be held from 11:00.
  • Dessert Cafe Chourakukan Special Opening
  • In honor of the episode of Kichibei Murai, who entertained guests visiting his residence with cream puffs during the Meiji era, the patissier's handmade cream puffs (with a drink) will be offered for two days only.
    Cream puffs are also available as part of the afternoon tea set "A plate of pleasure". (Other items on the café menu are also available.)

    2,500 yen per person with cream puff set (advance reservations required, available on the day of the event)
    Includes afternoon tea set ¥6,000 per person (advance reservation required)

    All visitors who purchase one of the tickets will enjoy the following privileges.

Privileges of Admission

  • ■Chorakukan "Onsei-no-ma & Choraku-an (usually closed to the public)" special open house
     Onari-no-Ma, a shoin-style Japanese-style room and Chorakuan, a tea ceremony room, located on the third (top) floor of the main building, will be open to the public for two days only.
     Venue: Main Bldg. 3rd floor
     Hours: 11:00-18:00
  • ■Okura Toen x Chiso Special Exhibition "Surrounded by Nature
     Created in collaboration with Chiso, a long-established Kyoto yuzen shop
     Okura Toen's vessels are exhibited and sold, with a focus on works that can be considered Okura Toen's pinnacle of excellence.
     Kimonos made by Chiso, which were the inspiration for the designs, will also be on display.
     Venue: Honkan 1F "Geihin-no-ma" (Guest Room)
     Hours: 11:00-18:00
  • ■Chorakukan Motif and Fashion Show
     Costume production and fashion show by twinkle, Kyoto Women's University's Apparel Planning and Production Department, using each room of Chorakukan as a motif.
     Collaboration cakes by Kyoto Women's University students and Chorakukan patissiers will also be on sale.
     Venue: 2nd floor, Main Bldg.
     Time: 10:30-10:45, one time each day Doors open at 10:15 on the day of the event.

Special Event I Collaboration Lunch & Dinner

  • Okura Toen, a leading Japanese ceramics manufacturer that produced the show plate for Chourakukan FRENCH LE CHENE.
    Special French cuisine and wine pairing expressed by its "vessel".
    Includes a talk show by Okura Toen staff and Chourakukan sommelier.

  • Fee: Collaboration lunch ticket ¥15,000 (advance reservation required)
       Collaboration Dinner Ticket ¥20,000 (advance reservation required)
       Entrance privileges are also available.

Special Program II: Chourakukan, Piano Trio Concert (9/30 only)

  • An autumn evening concert by a violinist, cellist and pianist active in Kyoto.
  • Fee: Piano Trio Concert Ticket ¥3,000 (advance reservations required, tickets available at the door)
       Includes a ¥500 discount coupon for Dessert Cafe Chourakukan
       Entrance privileges are also available.

Special Program Ⅲ Creative Rakugo: Shinoharu Tachikawa "Red and White Smoke Battle" (10/1 only)

  • A creative rakugo story by rakugo storyteller Shinoharu Tachikawa about Kichibei Murai, a businessman who built Chourakukan.
    What is Murai Kichibei? What is Kohaku Smoke Gassen? The first commemorative event was held at Chourakukan.

  • Fee: ¥3,500 for a ticket to Shinoharu Tachikawa's original rakugo (advance reservation required, tickets available at the door)

Tickets other than those with cream puff set will not be sold on the day of the event if they are sold out in advance.
*Pre-payment by credit card is required for some reservations.
*Collaborative lunches and dinners are not permitted for guests under 12 years old.
*Pre-school children are not permitted to attend concerts and rakugo performances.
Doors will open at 10:15 on the day of the show. All events other than the fashion show and use of the café will start from 11:00.
